A step-by-step guide for prospective members preparing to join Yahad Community by disposing of their assets and bringing the residue to the common treasury, based on the principles of the Handbook of Established Righteousness.
Introduction: The Spirit of the Law
The Law of Consecration is the temporal foundation of a Righteous Community.
It is the practical expression of the covenant of Shabuwa, whereby members cease to live for themselves alone and instead dedicate their substance to the building of Zion and the care of their neighbor in common fellowship.
As the Handbook of Established Righteousness teaches, this law requires that members "give of their substance . . . having all things in common among them, every man seeking the interest of his neighbor, and doing all things with an eye single to the glory of YAHUAH" (Handbook of Established Righteousness 4:10).
This is not a hasty or thoughtless act, but a diligent, prayerful, and planned process. This guide provides a step-by-step framework to help you and your family prepare for this sacred transition with wisdom and order.
Phase 1: Spiritual Preparation
Before any financial or physical steps are taken, a firm spiritual foundation must be laid. This phase is about confirming the calling and unifying the family in purpose.
Intensive Study & Prayer: As a family, dedicate yourselves to a thorough study of the Law of Consecration as outlined in the Handbook of Established Righteousness. Pray together for a unified understanding and confirmation of this path.
Family Council: Hold a formal family council. Discuss the implications of this law openly. Every member should have a voice, and the decision to proceed must be unanimous and founded on a shared spiritual witness.
Consult with the Yahad Council: Open a line of communication with the council of the Yahad you intend to join (or your own family council if you are the founders). Inform them of your intent and seek their counsel and prayers. This begins the process of accountability and transparency.
Phase 2: The Consecration Process
This is the practical phase of diligently preparing your assets for consecration. This process must be done with complete honesty and transparency, as if making an offering at the altar.
Step 1: Complete & Honest Inventory
The first act is to create a comprehensive list of all your possessions and financial holdings. Nothing should be withheld. Use a document similar to: Form 2 - Asset Consecration & Pledge from the Yahad Starter Pack as your guide.
Real Estate: Primary home, rental properties, land.
Vehicles: Cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers.
Financial Assets: Bank accounts (current, savings), retirement accounts (pensions etc.), investments (stocks, bonds), cash.
Personal Property of Significant Value: Jewelry, antiques, art, electronics, tools, furniture. Be thorough and honest.
Step 2: Settle All Debts & Obligations
A core principle is to come to the Yahad free from worldly encumbrances. Before any assets can be consecrated, all outstanding debts must be settled (where possible).
List all liabilities: Mortgages, car loans, credit card debt, personal loans, etc.
Create a plan to use the proceeds from the sale of assets to clear every single debt.
You cannot consecrate that which is owed to another.
Communicate with creditors if necessary to arrange for final payments upon the sale of property.
"And again, I say unto you, that every man shall stand in his own stewardship, to manage that which is his own, that he may be accountable to me, even his master, for the things which he has." - Handbook of Established Righteousness 4:2
Step 3: Plan the Orderly Disposal of Assets
With a clear inventory and a plan to settle debts, create a timeline for selling your assets. This is not a fire sale. The goal is to act with diligence to receive a fair value for your property, as the proceeds are a sacred offering.
Prioritize Large Assets: Start the process of selling your home and vehicles first, as these often take the longest.
Categorize Personal Property: Divide personal items into three categories:
Items to be sold (furniture, excess electronics, etc.).
Items to be given away to family or charity.
Essential personal items to be brought to the Yahad (clothing, important documents, tools related to your skills, sacred texts, and items of deep personal, non-monetary value). This should be a modest and practical collection.
Liquidate Financial Assets: Plan the timeline for closing accounts and liquidating investments, being mindful of any penalties or tax implications. Consult a financial advisor if necessary to ensure this is done wisely.
Step 4: The Residue & the Common Treasury
Once all assets have been sold and all debts have been settled, the money and assets that remain constitute the "residue." This residue is the consecrated substance you will bring to the common treasury of the Yahad.
Consolidate all funds from the sales into a single account.
Pay every outstanding debt in full.
The final amount remaining is your offering to YAHUAH for the building of Zion.
Phase 3: Integration and Stewardship
Upon arriving at the Yahad, the final step is to formally consecrate your substance and begin your life under the law of common substance.
Formal Consecration: Before the Yahad council, you will formally present the residue of your wealth to the Deacon or Deaconess who manages the common treasury. You will sign your completed Form 2 - Asset Consecration & Pledge, making a record of your offering.
Receiving Your Stewardship: From that moment, your family's needs are met from the common treasury. The council will work with you to provide a stewardship, which includes your family's home within the community, tools for your work, and access to common resources for food, health, and education, according to the needs of your family and the capacity of the Yahad.
Living in the Covenant: Your family now lives in the fullness of the covenant, free from the burdens of personal wealth and debt, able to focus on your spiritual growth, service to the community, and the work of righteousness.
"For if you will that I give you a place in the celestial world, you must prepare yourselves by doing the things which I have commanded you and required of you." - Handbook of Established Righteousness 4:32
